Fort Smith, Ark. – Cassie Cotta, 24, was last seen headed to a party in Alma with a man named Brandon Friday night, according to police. When she failed to show up for her New Year’s Eve shift at a Perry’s Place, a bar on N. 6th, her worried mother reported her missing.
Cpl. Stephen Dooly says Cotta’s husband Brent was the last known person to speak with her. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the neighborhood on Johnson Street where she was last seen, however, Cpl. Dooly tells 5NEWS witnesses say it’s common for that area.
The woman’s mother, Pearl Cook, tells 5NEWS that police have heard several stories from Cotta’s friends and witnesses. Cook now believes her daughter was not going to a party that night. She says Cotta had been drinking and worries something may have happened to her. Cook says Cotta sent a text to a friend at 11 p.m. that night but ‘it didn’t make sense.’
Cotta’s Facebook page shows she posted a status update just before 11 p.m. that read “Blah blah blah.. Cheers people! (Expletive) it!” and later commented that her cell phone battery was about to die. Cpl. Dooly did not say whether or not police believe foul play is involved. He says it’s unknown exactly how Cotta left her residence as her vehicle is still there.
Friends and family of Cotta have launched a campaign on Facebook and YouTube in hopes of spreading the word about her disappearance and bringing her home. Click here to watch a video posted on YouTube.
Loved ones also formed a search party over the weekend to find Cotta. Friends reported finding a “shallow grave” on some property near Cotta’s residence. However, police discovered that property owner had recently buried a family pet.
